Downers Grove is a village in the townships of Downers Grove and Lisle in DuPage County, Illinois located approximately twenty miles southwest of the city of Chicago. The community was founded in 1832 and composed primarily of immigrants from Northern Europe and the Northeastern United States. Downers Grove is serviced by the Metra commuter rail system and the BNSF Railway Line, as well as the Pace Bus Service and Interstates 355 and 88. The city lies in the humid continental climate zone of the U.S. and enjoys hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winter with beautiful weather in the springtime and fall! No matter what the season, Downers Grove is a great place to be any time of the year!
Downtown Downers Grove is listed on the Chicago Tribune’s "Top 10 List of Downtowns" and is home to over one-hundred and forty community events and festivals, and the Tivoli Theatre, a historic landmark in the downtown district. The Downers Grove Park District manages forty-nine parks covering more than six-hundred acres and is host to numerous recreational programs throughout the community for residents of all ages. The amenities featured at various parks throughout the district include twenty-four playgrounds, seventeen baseball and softball fields, eight basketball courts, seventeen tennis courts, nine picnic pavilions, three fishing ponds, lighted volleyball and horseshoe courts, trails for walking and jogging, a nine-hole public golf course, 18-hole miniature golf course, and the Downers Grove Historical Museum. The park district also sponsors swim programs at the Downers Grove Swim and Racquet Club and the Maple Hill Pool, both private clubs in the village of Downers Grove. An open gymnasium with gymnastic and tumbling programs is available at the Recreation and Fitness Center that includes basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts, as well as an exercise center and three-lane indoor track that overlooks the gym. Addressing the cultural needs of the community, the Downers Grove Park District provides avenues to the cultural, musical, and performing arts through the Downers Grove School of the Arts and the Downers Grove School of Dance.
The Village of Downers Grove is host to numerous community events and festivals, including the Independence Day Celebration in July and the Tree Lighting Ceremony in December.
In addition to the many cultural, recreational, and entertainment opportunities available to residents, the village is also home to more than three thousand businesses in fourteen business districts, a school district that has a national reputation for excellence, and more than fifty-thousand residents that make the village special!
